Singapore lauds Sri Lanka’s efforts to strengthen reconciliation


Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan has lauded the attempts made by the Sri Lankan Government to strengthen national reconciliation. The Singaporean Minister who is visiting the island made this statement during a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena.

Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan arrived in the island last night on a four day official visit. The Singaporean called on President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Office this morning. The visiting Singaporean Minister is scheduled to visit Jaffna tomorrow. He is scheduled to donate books to the Jaffna Library. He is also due to sign an agreement granting training opportunities to the Librarian staff. The Singaporean Government is also desirous of supporting the construction of a Orthopedic Section for the Jaffna Hospital. The President thanked the Singaporean Minister for taking initiatives to support these activities.

The President recalled the long standing close ties between the two countries from the ancient past. The President appreciated the support extended by Singapore to Sri Lanka in the international arena. Pointing out that there are wider opportunities for Singapore investments within Sri Lanka, the President extended an open invitation to Singaporean investments.

The visiting Foreign Minister mentioned that Singapore was prepared to undertake investments in the energy, education and technological sectors. He said that already more than 300 investors from Singapore have undertaken investments in the island. The Singaporean Foreign Minister lauded Sri Lanka’s moderate Foreign Policy. He announced Singapore’s determination to dedicate to further strengthening bilateral ties.
