The second phase of Suwa Seriya which was carried out at the Southern and Western Provinces, free of charge, commenced today. It was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The second phase will add 209 new ambulances to the service. The agreement was signed at Temple Trees this afternoon. 27 special Ambulances will also be deployed for the benefit of the public with a grant of 15 million US dollars.
The government hopes to deploy helicopters and boat services to places where ambulances cannot reach. The Indian government supports the initiative.
Indian high commissioner in Sri Lanka signed the agreement representing India. Director General of the Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that the ambulance service is a great strength to the free health service.
