State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has said that initiatives were taken to import rice with the aim of controlling the price and providing the commodity to consumers sans any shortage during the festive season.
The Minister said that when there is a shortage of certain goods, mainly if state Institutions did not mediate, private traders who import goods in large stocks, are being released to the market without a price control. The best example was rice. The Government has taken a decision that rice should be permitted to be imported as this is the festive season. The Finance Ministry gave an opportunity for the importation of 250,000 metric tons of rice. He attributed this mainly to maintain the control price and have sufficient stocks for this season.
The Minister expressed these views joining in the opening of the 330 Sathosa outlet at Thihagoda in Matara. Many people’s representatives of the area joined in this function.
