The removal of the Meethotamulla garbage dump has begun. Plans are afoot to construct a new town where the garbage dump was located.
A British company has come forward to remove the garbage dump in Meethotamulla. Garbage had been dumped in the area for several years. The British company had entered into an agreement with the Western Provincial Council. It was handed over near the garbage junkyard itself.
Plans have been drawn up for the disposal of 4,000 metric tons of garbage daily. Accordingly, expressing views on the occasion, Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya said that the garbage could be removed within six years.
Among those present on the occasion were Parliamentarian S.M. Marikkar and several regional politicians.
