Release of first waters of Moragahakanda Reservoir is on Jan. 11

The release of the maiden waters of the Moragahakanda Reservoir is slated to take place on the 11th of this month. Deputy Minister Anuradha Jayaratne who undertook an inspection tour revealed that all arrangements have been finalized for the event. The Moragahakanda Reservoir spans 29 square kilometres. The total cost of the project is estimated at 1200 million US Dollars. The construction of the dams of the reservoir has entered the final phase. The release of the initial waters of the Moragahakanda Reservoir is scheduled to take place under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
Arrangements have been made to launch work on the construction of the Elahera Project alias the Rajarata Ela network on the same day. The Moragahakanda Reservoir will fulfil the water requirements of the people of the Northern, North Central and Eastern Provinces. The intention of the Government is to grant relief to the people of these Provinces that are infected with the kidney disease. The distance of the Rajarata Ela network is 102 metres. It will provide water to around 1500 small tanks in the Dry Zone.
