Railway Unions say there is a political conspiracy behind the strike

Railway Trade Unions point out that there is a political conspiracy behind the train strike mooted by certain Trade Unions.
Secretary of the Railway Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union Indika Dodangoda has said that their trade union action will further continue.
A special discussion was held at the Transport Ministry today with respect to the strike launched by the Railway Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union last night with regard to the existing recruitment methodology for assistant train drivers. The discussion was attended by Ministry Secretary G.S. Vithanage, General Manager Railways Mahanama Abeywickrema and representatives of the Railway Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union.
Ministry Secretary G.A. Vithanage informed the Union that they could not mediate with respect to the facts impacting the strike as there is case pending in the Supreme Court.
Ministry Secretary G.A. Vithanage requested the Trade Union to get involved in sorting out the issues through negotiations.
In the meantime, addressing a news conference in Colombo today President of the Railway Assistant Drivers Union Danushka Perera mentioned that the strike launched at present was totally illegal.
The Transport Ministry has in the meantime declared that the Sri Lanka Transport Board was operating additional buses to overcome the difficulties experienced by the commuters.
