Provision of houses to the Meethotamulla displaced begins tomorrow on orders of the President and the Prime Minister


President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to the authorities concerned to begin from tomorrow the provision of houses to the disaster struck Meethotamulla people who had lost their houses. The President issued these instructions at a special discussion held under his and the Prime Minister’s patronage.
The President issued these instructions at a discussion held at the Disaster Management Ministry this morning on the provision of relief to the families impacted by the tragedy. With the intention of expediting the resettlement of the families impacted by the collapse of the Meethotamulla mount, the provision of houses to 98 families who lost their abodes will commence tomorrow.
The President ordered the strengthening of granting the required infrastructure to the families who are being evacuated from the Meethotamulla danger zone. The President also issued instructions to carry out the work related to the removal of the garbage from the area within the next few months with the full support of the Sri Lanka Army and also to illegal settlements.
President Maithripala Sirisena gave orders to the related institutions including the Valuation Department to submit an assessment report within this week after completing the assessment of the damage inflicted. It was agreed at this discussion to expedite the granting of compensation after the receipt of this report. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe advised the immediate release of financial grants from the Treasury.
Drawing his dire attention to the granting of compensation to the impacted families, the President said that the necessary activities should be carried out in this respect. President Maithripala Sirisena further said that he solicited in the future the support of all the institutions that had so far been assisting in the granting of relief.
The next meeting to review the progress on the Meethotamulla disaster situation is due to be held on the 21st of this month.
It was also agreed at this meeting that the issue of media releases with regard to this tragedy and also the issues of policy decision of the Government to the media should be handled only by the Disaster Management Ministry and the Government Information Department.
