A special programme will be launched to enhance the productivity of women who will be victorious at the forthcoming Local Government polls. This reference has been made by Secretary to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government Kamal Pathmasiri. He was speaking at a workshop on the promotion of participation of women in politics through the media.
Sri Lanka’s women population is 52.7 percent. Also noteworthy is the occupation of a high percentage of women in local services. However, the percentage of women representation in the political field is a mere 5.88. In Nepal women representation in politics is nearly 30 percent while in Pakistan it exceeds 20 percent.
Taking into consideration this situation, the present Government has succeeded in enacting legislation to increase women representation in Local Government institutions to 25 percent. Secretary to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government Kamal Pathmasiri said that women representation will be increased in this manner, while the next step will be to impart full knowledge with respect to the local government field to women who will succeed in being elected.
The discussion was held as a joint project of the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs as well as the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government. Representatives of many media establishments attended this discussion.
