The priority bus lanes will be in force in the Colombo City with effect from the 15th of this month. It is planned to be enforced in several stages. These details were revealed at a media briefing summoned today.
The media conference was held under the patronage of Minister Patalie Champika Ranawaka and Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.
Minister Patalie Champka Ranawaka said that all private and public buses will have to on the bus-lanes on all weekdays from 6.00am to 9.00am. He mentioned that the first stage will be operative from the 15th of August from the Kurusa Handiya in Rawatawatte to Katubedda along the Galle Road and from the Savoy Cinema Hall up to Bambalapitiya. Also from the 22nd of August it will be operative from the Katubedda Junction to Maliban Junction and from Bambalapitiya to the Pittala Junction. The dedicated bus lanes will also be operative from the Polduwa Junction to the Ayurvedha Junction and from Town Hall Junction to the Thunmulla Junction via the Colombo University with effect from August 29. This will be operative towards Colombo from 6.00 to 9.00 am specially targeting school and office buses.
Project Advisor Prof. Amal Kumarage said that they required the support of the Police for the implementation of the programme. This is something new for drivers and also for the country. He pointed out that there may be certain shortcomings in the programme. Accordingly the proposal is to complete the exercise by September 17th.
