An announcement on the reduction of prices of 47 drugs will be made on Friday.
This was revealed by Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala at a media conference held at the Health Ministry.
The Health Services Director General said that they have already prepared the gazette notification and directed to the legal draft section. They have informed that by Thursday they would be able to complete the entire process and provided to the Health Ministry. The Minister will thereafter take immediate action to release the gazette notification. He said that action would be taken to reduce the prices of drugs once the gazette is released. He referred to plans to increase the number or drugs. He mentioned that many of the drugs of which prices have been reduced are those that are being mainly used by the public.
The main objective of this programme is to provide quality drugs to the public at a reasonable price realizing the expectations of Prof. Senaka Bibile. It was revealed at this news conference the drugs used for diseases such as diabetes and blood pressure are included in the price reduction list.
Dr. Palitha Mahipala expressed views on the issues that would further in the implementation of this programme.
He said that one of problems that could surface is a shortage of drugs. He said that they have already drawn up plans to face such a situation.
