Addressing the nation on the 4th anniversary of the Victory Day the President stated that the current era should be recorded in history as the era in which the war and bloodshed ended and development was launched. After winning independence from the white imperialists in 1948, in the beginning of the nineteen seventies the LTTE terrorists attempted to obstruct the path of the Sri Lankans. The attempts made by the leaders of the country to stop the activities were unsuccessful. The war heroes led by the Commander In Chief, President Mahinda Rajapaksa were able bring an end to the dark era faced by the Sri Lankans.A celebration was held this morning at Galle Face to mark the 4th anniversary of the Victory Day. The Prime Minister led by the Ministers and Parliamentarians, government officials, the Secretaries to the Ministries and diplomats were amongst those who participated in the occasion. The President and the First Lady were ushered to the venue by the mounted police. The President was welcomed by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. Thereafter the President hoisted the national flag. A one minute silence was observed in honour of the departed war heroes. Thereafter a 21 gun salute was held in honour of the President. The President inspected the parade from a special vehicle. Addressing the gathering the President stated that the journey of the nation towards development has now begun. The President said that still there are political parties that support Prabhakaran and separatism. The Tamil community does not need enemies as long as those exist. He said that the Tamil people should understand whether the people who represent them are honest. For 30 years the fishermen could not venture into sea. But now others come and steal their harvest. They are the ones who try to bring pressure on the governments on behalf of the Tamil people. When more than 300 thousand hostages of the LTTE escaped, it was the security forces personnel and the government that even offered a meal. There was no one else. More than 11,000 former LTTE cadres have been rehabilitated and released. He asked as to whether there is any other country which would do the same as some even qualified for capital punishment. He expressed confidence that Tamil people would make up their minds to live in one country. He said that the country has been won with the supreme sacrifices made. The country will not be permitted to be divided. He said that there is a large number that is prepared to sacrifice their lives on behalf of the country. The President pointed out that the terrorism believed to be indomitable was eliminated due to the people who love the country and the confidence placed in the youths who were committed towards the country.
He said that those who ruled the country did deplorable things as they believed that the LTTE cannot be defeated. The entire world said that they cannot be defeated and to offer what ever they needed. We would still have been frightened by the parcels on roadside if the advice was heeded. He said that this government believed in the strength and the heroism of the youths. He said that the small children mainly understand the freedom. The children in the frontline villages had to spend nights under trees. Their mothers had to wait in the hot sun to guard the gates of the schools until the children came out. The children will tell the future generations about this story. He said even if they die thousands will be born to maintain the heroism.
The President also presented the Parama Veera Vibhushana medals on behalf of the war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the battle field. The relatives of the fallen heroes received the awards. The President also viewed the parades of the security forces, Police and the Civil Defence Force. The parade also included several armoured cars used in the humanitarian operation. The celebration was coloured by the naval vessels sailing in the sea and an Air Force fly past. A team of paratroopers also landed on the Galle Face green.
