President discusses continuous programme for the future of arts, culture and cinema

President Maithripala Sirisena has underscored the need for a continuous programme for the future of the fields of arts, culture and cinema and the implementation of proposals of intellectuals in this respect. The President gave instructions for its handling by a Committee consisting of representatives of the Ministries of Mass Media, Culture and Education.President Maithripala Sirisena issued these instructions at a discussion held with intellectual artistes. The discussion was held at the Presidential Secretariat. The issue concerning the payment of royalties was discussed. In this case, the President gave instructions to formulate a state policy seeking the views of a group of impartial scholars that has a knowledge on the subject. Attention was drawn to the development of the John de Silva Memorial Theatre.
The President advised to take future measures summoning a discussion with the participation of the Minister of Cultural Affairs and the officials concerned.
Attention was also drawn to restricting the import of films and teledramas for the uplift of the local cinema and the fields of arts. The President said that a high contribution could be made through arts to make the reconciliation programme a success. The President pointed out the importance of creations for the building of national unity and mutual awareness.
The President declared that a virtuous generation can be groomed through the improvement of the art appreciation of school children.
