President Maithripala Sirisena has attributed the defeat of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to the behavior of certain leaders of Local Government bodies. He pointed out that the preferential voting system should be altered and the public permitted to elect suitable people’s representatives to the Local Councils. The President mentioned that in the past few years mainly heads of Local Government bodies were accused of fraud, corruption, financial scams, drugs peddling and women and child abuse. Political deterioration was mainly due to the behavior of political leads of Local Councils. As a result, not only the Government but also the Sri Lanka Freedom Party that was in power earned disrepute. The President said this led to a change in Government. President Maithripala Sirisena was addressing a function organized for the opening of a building of the Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha in Kotikawatte. Former Deputy Minister Nawalage Bennet Cooray of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who served as the first Chairman of the Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha in Kotikawatte was feted on this occasion. Minister Karu Jayasuriya, Kaduwela Mayor G.H. Buddhadasa and Kotikawatte Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Prasanna Solangarachchi as well as representatives of many Local Government bodies were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena also participated in a conference organized by the Diriya Vanitha Foundation of the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat. It was held at the National Child Education Foundation in Kolonnawa. Expressing his views on the occasion, President Sirisena said that action will be initiated to accord the proper honour and state recognition due to national institutions serving on behalf of children and women. He emphasized that the Government is totally dedicated to fulfilling every responsibility that should be meted out on behalf of the welfare of children as well as mothers.
