Power cuts are being imposed to face the power shortage that
is being experienced due to a breakdown at the Norochcholai Thermal Coal Power Plant. Addressing a news briefing held at the Ministry of Power and Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that it has been possible to reduce the proposed power cut period with the mediation of the President through the use of Mahaweli irrigation water for power generation.
Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that the scheduled power cut has been reduced to 1 hour in the morning and half hour in the evening. Earlier, the Minister said that power cuts lasting two and a half hours during the day and one hour during the night would be imposed from today. He mentioned that the country has been divided into four zones and power cuts will be imposed accordingly.
