The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has secured power in a majority of Local Government bodies in the polls conducted for the election of members for 340 Local Councils.
The number of Local Bodies won by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was 239. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna that consolidated power in 19 of the 25 Districts in the island succeeded in securing power of all Local Councils within the Kegalla, Ratnapura and Moneragala Districts. The United National Party gained power of 42 Local Bodies while the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United Peoples Freedom Alliance won only 10 Local Councils. The Tamil National Alliance secured power of 34 Local Councils. While the Ceylon Workers Congress gained power of five Local Government Institutions, the Muslim Congress managed to secure power of three Local bodies.
The total number of votes polled by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was 4,966,203. Its percentage is 45.31. The number of seats gained is 2949.
The United National Party has polled 3,621,338 and its percentage is 32.23. The number of seats gained is 2041.
The United People’s Freedom Alliance has polled 1,188,248. It is a percentage of 8.61. The number of seats won is 523.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna obtained 685,523 votes and won 432 seats. Their voter percentage is 6.26.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has polled 1,188,248 and its percentage is 8.61. The number of seats gained is 523. The Ilangai Thamil Arasu Kachchi has consolidated its position in the North. The total number of votes polled by the Party is 333,406. The voter percentage is 3.01 and the seats gained is 34.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna consolidated power in nine Local Government Bodies within the Colombo District in the Western Province. The United National Party consolidated power in three Authorities. An Independent Group secured victory in one Council.
In the Gampaha District, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna secured power in 17 Local Bodies, while the United National Party gained power in two Local Councils.
In the Kalutara District the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna consolidated power in 13 Local Authorities, while the United National Party gained power in three Local Councils, an Independent Group gained power in one Council.
In the Central Province, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in 17 Local Government Institutions within the Kandy District. The United National Party gained power in four Local Bodies.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in 12 Local Councils while the United National Party gained power in the Matale Urban Council.
It was the United National Party that secured power in a majority of Local Bodies in the Nuwara Eliya District. The Ceylon Workers Congress gained power in three Local Government Bodies.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in 18 Local Government Institutions of the Galle District in the Southern Province. The United National Party gained power in the Galle Municipal Council.
In the Matara District the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in 15 Local Bodies. The United National Party won the Weligama Urban Council.
While in the Hambanthota District the United National Party won the Hambanthota Municipal Council. The power of all other 11 Local Councils was secured by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party gained power in four of the Local Councils in the Polonnaruwa District within the North Central Province. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna secured power of three Local Authorities.
In the Anuradhapura District, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in 18 Local Bodies. The Eksath Janatha Maha Sabha Party gained power in the Thiruppane Paradeshiya Sabha.
In the Eastern Province, the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi won power of five Local Councils of the Batticaloa District. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party gained power in two Local Councils, while the Muslim National Alliance, the Tamil Peoples Liberation Tigers and an Independent Group won a Local Council each.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in four of the Local Councils within the Trincomalee District. The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi and the Lanka Muslim Congress each gained power in two Local Bodies. The United Peoples Freedom Alliance gained power of one Local Authority.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in seven Local Bodies in the Ampara District. The United National Party secured power of five Local Government Bodies. The Ilangai Thamil Arasu Kachchi gained power of two Local Bodies while the Tamil United Liberation Front won one Local Council.
In the Northern Province, the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi gained power of three Local Councils in the Kilinochchi District while the same Party grabbed power of nine Local Government Authorities in the Jaffna District. Agila Ilankai Tamil Congress won three Local Councils. The Eelam People’s Democratic Party gained power of two Local Councils.
The United National Party consolidated power in three Local Bodies in the Mannar District while the Ilangai Thamil Arasu Kachchi secured power of two Local Bodies.
The Ilangai Thamil Arasu Kachchi gained power of three Local Councils in the Mullaitivu District.
The same party gained power of three Local Bodies in the Vavuniya District while the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party secured power of one Local Body each.
In the Sabaragamuwa Province, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power of 11 Local Councils in the Kegalla District. The United National Party won the Ruwanwella Pradeshiya Sabha.
The power of all Local Councils in the Ratnapura District was consolidated by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
In the Northwestern Province, the power of seven Local Councils of the Puttalam District was consolidated by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna while the United National Party gained power of two Local Authorities.
While the United National Party won the Kuliyapitiya Urban Council in the Kurunegala District, the power of all other Local Government Authorities was secured by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
Seven of the Local Councils of the Badulla District in the Uva Province were won by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna while the United National Party gained power of four Local Bodies. The United Peoples Freedom Alliance secured power of two Local Bodies.
The power of all Local Authorities within the Moneragala District was secured by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
