PM reveals how Rajapaksa regime directed funds allocated for tourism to Local Government polls

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe revealed in Welimada today how funds allocated for tourist promotion was spent by the Rajapaksa regime for Local Government polls via welfare societies. The Prime Minister emphasized that it is now confirmed that the funds given for the Welfare Society of the Tourism Board for the promotion of tourism were used for the Local Council poll. The Prime Minister was speaking at the United National Party membership programme in Welimada.

The Prime Minister said that the last Local Government poll was held in Uva. They worked for victory in Badulla. But the Freeedom Alliance won the Badulla District with 6000 votes. Reason are now surfacing as to why they won. A programme was launched by the Tourist Board to give publicity to Sri Lanka. Ten million rupees was set aside for this work. The programme was entrusted to the Welfare Society of the Tourist Board. This Welfare Society released the funds for Passara. As such he queried whether it is a surprise that the people of Passara voted. Votes were purchased in this manner.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has given an assurance that more attention will be diverted in next year’s budget to reduce the debt burden. Premier Wickremesinghe pointed out that the first year passed to get rid of debts. The debt issue is being gradually solved. He said that the budget will be prepared to reduce the debt burden. Revenue should be increased to reduce the gap between income and expenditure.

Expressing his views on the occasion Minister Harin Fernando said that there is no opportunity for those who voted for the Swan to meet in Welikada.

State Minister Ravindra Samaraweera pointed out that it was foreign workers who served in local development project during the previous regime. As such he claimed that the Sri Lankans were deprived of the jobs due to them.

The United National Party membership promotion programme under the theme “Come those who want to move forward” was held at the United National Party office in Nugatalawa Welimada under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. The Prime Minister visited house by house and handed over the membership cards in the Welimada town. This membership promotion was organized by United National Party electoral organizer, State Minister Ravindra Samaraweera.

Ministers Harin Fernando and Ranjith Madduma Bandara were among those who joined in this occasion.
