PM invites local investors to uplift the tea industry

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has said that if investors do not come forward to uplift the industry that opportunity should be afforded to foreign investors. The Prime Minister also said that the manufacture of new products should be undertaken utilizing new technology parallel to the increasing world population. Premier Wickremasinghe was addressing a conference organized to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Tea Industry. The International Tea Conference opened in Colombo yesterday and is slated to draw to a close the day after tomorrow. The conference was today inaugurated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.
Among those who joined in this occasion were Minister Naveen Dissanayake and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board Rohan Pethiyagoda as well as many local and foreign representatives. Addressing the gathering the Prime Minister said that action should be taken targeting new technology, new methodologies as well as a new market parallel to the population growth in the year 2050. In his address Minister Naveen Dissanayake said that suitable reforms would be undertaken to create a competitive and conducive economy for the country within the next two decades.
