Parliament today convened as a Constitutional Assembly. The Constitutional Assembly convened for the first time at the Parliament today, for the purpose of formulating a new Constitution for Sri Lanka.

The appointment of seven Deputy Chairmen and 21 Steering Committee members took place at the Constitutional Assembly.

Accordingly Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala, Minister Kabir Hasheem, State Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle, and Parliamentarians Selvam Adaikalanathan, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Nalinda Jayatissa and Thilak Marapone were elected as the seven Deputy Chairmen. The related proposal was made by Minister Lakshman Kiriella while it was seconded by Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran.

Thereafter the appointment of the Steering Committee headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe took place. This proposal was made by Minister Gayantha Karunatilake. It was seconded by State Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the appointment of a Sub Committee of the Constituent Assembly will take place on the 30th of this month. Sittings were adjourned until tomorrow after these appointments were made.

A meeting of members of the Steering Committee appointed today was scheduled to take place today.
