Today is Binara Full Moon Poya Day which marks several important incidents including the launch of the Bhikkuni Sasana. Many religious programmes are being held in temples throughout the island to mark this religious day.
The Buddha gave permission to Maha-Prajapati Gotami to enter the homeless life ‘in this doctrine and discipline’ on condition that she would accept the Eight Great conditions.
The other significance of this Poya is that it falls during the Vas retreat season of Bhikkhus. The bhikkhus who are in Vas retreat in temples get engaged in acts of guiding the Upasakas and Upasikas in Dhamma path by ways of Dhamma sermons, and advising and helping them in religious rituals such as Bodhi Poojas, in gratitude to those who look after the bhikkhus in providing them with the four essentials in the life of a bhikkhu namely: Cheevara, pindapatha, senasana and gilanopastana.
Meanwhile the Savanak Res Full Moon Poya Day programme was telecast live from the Middeniya Kudagallara Sri Bodhirajarama Purana Vihare. The Savanak Res Dhamma Sermon was delivered by the Ven. Aandurugoda Paduma Thera. Dhamma discussions and meditation were among the many religious programmes telecast throughout the day from the temple. This Pinkama was organized by Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
The ITN FM Sasanaloka programme was organized this Poya Day also from the Middeniya Kudagallara Sri Bodhirajarama Purana Vihare. Dhamma books were offered on behalf of the Samanera Bikkhus while tributes were offered to the parents who offered their children to the Sasana. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and Southern Province Minister H.W. Gunasena were among the large gathering present.
