Permits of industrialists manufacturing boats sans proper standards to be revoked

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has said that action will be taken to revoke the permits of factories manufacturing fisheries boats devoid of the required standards. The Minister also said that a 50 percent subsidy and credit will be given for the manufacture of fisheries trawlers which are more than 55 feet long.
The Minister was speaking at a discussion held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development. The Minister revealed that the number of small fishing boats in the island had exceeded 47,000. Therefore the Minister said that action would be taken to suspend the granting of permits to further manufacture small boats. Since the ban imposed on Sri Lanka for the export of fish to the European Union had been lifted there is a need to export a high fish yield. It was revealed at this discussion that large fishing trawlers should be used in the international sea to net in large fish.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Government has decided to grant a 50 percent subsidy to industrialists who manufacture as much as boats which are more than 55 feet in length. If necessary the Government is ready to grant loans on concessionary terms. The discussion was attended by a group of officials of the Fisheries Ministry and boat manufacturers.
