The model village programme has been revived after a lapse of 21 years. Another housing project will be vested in the people tomorrow. The programme create a revolution in housing development in Sri Lanka. Its revival is sure to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
It was former President the Late Ranasinghe Premadsa who directed the country’s housing programme to a revolutionary change with the intention of making every citizen a proud owner of a block of land and a house. While serving as the Prime Minister, Ranasinghe Premadasa launched the 100,000 housing programme, the one million housing programme and the 1.5 million housing programme, directing the country towards a new path. Noteworthy was that all these housing programmes were not limited to granting houses.
A special place connected to livelihood development was attached to it. However, this housing concept became defunct with his demise. But it has now been revived under the leadership of his son, Minister Sajith Premadasa.
Sahanagama, the second village under the model village concept revived after 21 years meeting the desires of the ordinary people, will be declared open tomorrow under the auspices of Minister Sajith Premadasa. It has come up within the Lunugamvehera Divisional Secretariat Division at Tissamaharama in Hambantota. It is planned to vest 25 houses under the first stage. The village has all infrastructure including power and water.
Parallel to the opening of the village it is planned to grant entitlement certificates tomorrow to 53 recipients for the second stage of “Sahanagama.” Measures are being taken to award land permits to 300 families who are settled in state lands. The building of 38 model villages countrywide under this concept will take place with community participation.
The recipients will carry out construction of houses on an extent of land given by the Government on loans provided on concessionary terms. The housing programmes including the model village projects would succeed in placing the country on a high development path imparting maximum benefits to the people.
