The launch of the National Health Insurance Seminar took place at the BMICH. The event was organized under the patronage Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. Giving his views on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the allocation made by the present Government to the health sector after assuming office had been increased by 25 percent. The Prime Minister said that action was being taken to increase our medical capabilities locally. Health facilities at the National Blood Transfusion Institute, the National Cancer Institute, the Ampara Teaching Hospital and the Ayurvedha Hospital have been increased and opportunities for study at these centres have also been increased. The Prime Minister said that the economy cannot be strengthened sans such investments. The country cannot rise up without a strong economy.
Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayantha who joined in this occasion said development in the health sector is vital for the country to rise up globally.
The Minister said that enhanced development is necessary in the health sector to meet the sustainable development global targets declared by the United Nations in 2015. Considerable development in the health sector is important for Sri Lanka to traverse from the Middle economy to advance economy. Deaths have increased from non-communicable disease with the increasing population. He said that Sri Lanka intends to rise up in the medical research sector. Maximum support will be extended for the research carried out in this respect.
The keynote address at this conference was delivered by Prof. Allen Lopez of the Melbourne University in Australia.
Several books were presented to the Prime Minister.
