National Fisheries policy will be ready before the end of the year

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera is prepared to craft a National Fisheries Policy before the end of this year. He is geared to make the fisheries industry the third export income earner of the country by the year 2020.
The Minister revealed of plans to undertake an exploration about the fisheries resources. Accordingly the Norwegian Government has agreed to provide to Sri Lanka a vessel. It has also agreed to provide Sri Lanka technical knowledge and financial grants too. He said Sri Lanka has national policies that are subject to changes not only with the change of Governments but also Ministries.
The Minister referred to plans of formulating a National Policy for fisheries before the year end. It will be done so that this National Policy would remain for several years.
The Minister made these observations joining in the occasion for the signing of several agreement with the Norwegian Government. The event was held at the auditorium of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development. Norway’s Acting Minister Terj Nervick. NARA Chairman Anil Premaratne and Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mangalika Adhikari inked the agreements. Four agreements including an MOU for the development of local fishery industry were reached on the occasion.
