Ministers emphasize that there is no basis for opposing SAITM

It was emphasized at the weekly Cabinet news briefing

that there is no basis for opposing the Malambe Private Medical College. Several Parliamentarians expressed their views in this respect.
Minister S.B. Dissanayake said that Opposition of the GMOA is nothing new. They were totally against when the medical degree was to be awarded to Assistant doctors. Nurses and midwives while serving in their positions become doctors in the world. They also totally opposed awarding degrees to nurses. They even did not permit the nurses to undergo training in hospitals for the nurses after awarding degrees to them. The Minister pointed out that there are many Private Medical Colleges in countries that are much poorer than Sri Lanka.
Minister Gayantha Karunatilake pointed out that SAITM was initially gazetted on August 31st 2011. Also in the year 2011 10 students who sat the Advanced Level Examination and could not enter state universities, Mahinda Rajapaksa awarded scholarships to them to study at the Malambe Private Medical College.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella queried as to what the standard of the doctors if they do not respect the court verdict. He said there were 15 lawyers who appeared in the case. He said that it was the United National Party that started free education. He assured that the party would protect and nurture free education.
