Minister Patalie Champika Ranawaka has sent letter of demand seeking
a compensation of 1000 million rupees for the harm done to his image through several reports published in the “Mawbima” daily newspaper. Letters of demand have been sent to the Chief Editor, the reporter and the publication company of the newspaper, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
A report had been published in the “Mawbima” newspaper on the 14th of this month under the heading “Patalie Champika Ranawaka is responsible for the tender theft.” A report published on the second page of this newspaper cited leader of the Democratic Left Front Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara as saying that Patalie Champika Ranawaka is primarily responsible for the coal tender theft that vibrated even the conscience of the judiciary.
Also another report was published in the front page of the “Mawbima” newspaper on 15th July under the title “the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna lodging a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Secretariat, names Champika for the 1800 million rupee coal fraud and if possible carry out a probe.”
Minister Patalie Champika Ranawaka through his lawyer has sent this letter of demand claiming that these reports had smeared his image.
Accordingly letters of demand have been sent to the Chief Editor of the “Mawbima” daily newspaper, the reporter who filed the report and the Ceylon Newspapers Private Limited, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Office and Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
The letter of demand further called for a publication saying that this news report was fake and giving equal publicity to the publicity given to these reports and if not that alternative action would have to be initiated.
