The minimum age limit of criminal responsibility has been increased.
The Minimum age limit of eight years which hitherto prevailed in the country has been increased to 12. Cabinet nod has been given to amend the related Act.
A child below the age of 12 years should not be punished if a crime is committed. In case of a child between 12 and 14 years, such a child could be punished if the Magistrate determines whether such a child has the required degree of maturity to form the requisite intent to commit such a crime.
The Bill to amend the Penal Code with these provisions will be submitted to Parliament after being gazetted.
