A programme has been launched to improve the quality of the van service launched to transport school children. Accordingly statistics with respect to the school vans operating islandwide is being gathered. This was revealed by Chairman of the National Council on Road Safety Dr. Sisira Kodagoda.
Dr. Sisira Kodagoda said that according to statistics available there are about 40,000 vans transporting school children. He said many of these vehicles are not in a suitable position to transport children.
There is a lack of seats and there are vehicles which accommodate more children than the number permitted. There are mechanical and technical problems in some of them. As such they are taking initiatives to minimize these obstacles directing attention to the safety of the school children.
