The Police have already launched a special operation to apprehend drunken drivers during this festive season. They have succeeded in nabbing 254 drunk drivers during the past twenty four hours.
It was on the 10th of this month that the Police unveiled their special operation to take into custody drunken drivers. The Police Headquarters announced that this operation is in place covering the entire island.
They have succeeded in apprehending 254 drunken drivers during the last 24 hours. The number arrested since the launch of this operation was 473. It is reported a majority of them are motorcyclists. Accordingly, the office of the Police Media Spokesman pointed out that the number of motorcyclists taken into custody was 261. In addition the number of three wheel drivers nabbed is 153. In addition to 17 motorcar drivers, the number of lorry drivers taken into custody is 14. There are also 11 van drivers in \police custody.
Drivers are being reminded to refrain from being behind the wheels after the consumption of liquor considering the safety of theirs as well as the lives of others.
Dr. Samantha Kumara, Director of the Drugs Task Force has called on the people to join in celebrating the New Year with new desires sans liquor.
It is reported that the number admitted to the Accidents Service of the Colombo National Hospital as a result of sudden accidents is 236.
National Training Officer of the Accidents Service Pushpa Ramyani Soysa said that one of them has already succumbed to injuries.
