2000 who had passed the Advanced Level Examination in Science and Maths will be recruited as teachers after training. The revelation was made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Government will continue to grant relief to the people and its aim is also to bring down the cost of commodities. He said that a major part of taxes was being spent on education.
The Prime Minister said that the number of Science and Maths teachers is less. The Government has a new programme to overcome the dearth. They plan to recruit 2000 who have passed the Advanced Level Examination to the Education Ministry. They will be provided an opportunity to obtain their degree and the Prime Minister said that discussions have been held with several institutions for them to enter schools as ordinary teachers.
On one side the intention of the Government is to undertake the development of the country and when the economy grows a higher income could be earned. Secondly it is planned to reduce the debt burden. Salaries of public servants were increased last year. The relief granted to the public should remain.
The Prime Minister emphasized that no one can interfere with this relief. If the prices of petrol and kerosene were increased it would have an impact on all fields and this was the main reason the Finance Minister decided to impose VAT on non-essential goods. The Prime Minister added that this is the avenue to secure funds for the work of the Government.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe was speaking at a function held at the Vihara Mahadevi Vidyalaya in Kiribathgoda. The event was organized for the opening of the schools Indoor Stadium. A sum of 25 million rupees had been spent on the first stage of the project. It was revealed that the total cost of the project would amount to 35 million rupees.
School Principal Anoma Shyamali Abeyratne presented a memento to the Prime Minister for the services rendered by him on behalf of education. State Minister Ruwan Wijewardena was among the large gathering present on the occasion.
