The Minister of Trade has decided to obtain a report on paddy and rice stocks maintained by the government and private sector organizations throughout the country.
Minister Johnston Fernando has issued instructions to the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority to start formulating the report tomorrow. There is an excess stock of rice and paddy in the country at present. The Minister has instructed to take legal action against anyone who attempts to conceal the stocks and create an artificial shortage. The Minister has also instructed the Consumer Affairs Ministry to take action against those who sell above the controlled price. Legal action has been taken against 100 persons who sold rice at a higher price. The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade said that raids will be continued.
