Late Ven. Girambe Ananda Thera earned respect of the Sangha as well as other religious leaders; PM


Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has observed that the Late Anunayake of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya and the Chief of the Anuradhapura Sri Sarananda Pirivena the Ven. Girambe Ananda Thera was a monk not only of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya but also a great prelate who earned respect of the Sangha of other Nikayas as well as leaders of the Christian, Hindu and Islam religions and the entire nation.
The Prime Minister recalled that Ven. Girambe Ananda Thera, led the great tradition to the preservation of the Buddha’s mission, public rights and academic heritage through the great bond of the people of the Sambuddha Sasana, the country and the people. He made a direct and active contribution to the struggle of establishing a wellbeing country. Premier Wickremasinghe said that the prelate gave him as well as the United National Party guidance and advice and the blessings of the Maha Sangha.
He was dedicated to the serving the religion and the Sasana by building a national centre and establishing the Sarananda Maha Pirivena in the midst of the Anuradhapura Sacred City. The statement issued by the Prime Minister further said that the Late Anunayake Thera rendered yeoman service for the Buddhist village renaissance grooming a student generation. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe emphasized that the priority task of the entire nation should be to build the just society the prelate expected.
Meanwhile, our correspondents say that large crowds are descending on the Sarananda Pirivena in Anuradhapura to pay their final respects to the Ven. Girambe Ananda Thera.
The remains of the Anunayake Thera will lie until the day after tomorrow at the Sarananda Maha Pirivena. The funeral will take place at the Walisinghe Harischandra Sports Grounds on Saturday afternoon with full state honours. The prelate was 80 years at the time of his demise.
