A lane network for safe pedestrian travel has been built along the stretch from near the Lake House establishment to Olcott Mawatha in the D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha has been vested in the public. It has been constructed under the programme of building safety lanes for pedestrian travel in Colombo. The opening of this lane took place this morning under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Heavy traffic congestion is being witnessed in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas. As such the pedestrians find it difficult to travel. Taking this into consideration, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development had taken action to build a pedestrian lane network. Accordingly the first stage was launched from near Lake House along D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha in Colombo up to Olcott Mawatha. The expenditure incurred on this work was 17 million rupees.

The construction work on the first stage has been completed with the labour contribution of the Navy. The President after opening this lane joined in an observation visit.

In the meantime, President Maithripala Sirisena paid his last respects to Nanda Ratnayake, the mother of veteran film Director Bennet Ratnayake. He joined in paying his last respects last night. The President visited the Pelawatte house in Battaramulla where the remains are lying. He later expressed his condolences to the family members.
