Patients have been severely inconvenienced due to a decision taken regarding heart surgeries at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. Heart surgeries at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital have been done at a separate operation theater. However it has been changed since a period of one year. Many surgeries that are performed at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, are being done at present in Cardio Surgical Theatre. Cardio Thoracic Surgeon of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Dr. Namal Gamage said that it has been decided temporarily to stop heart surgeries as the operating theatre has become infected with germs due to other surgeries. He said that hospital authorities were constantly made aware about the situation of the operating theatre. About 3,000 patients who were awaiting heart surgeries have been severely inconvenienced due to this decision. Many residential patients have been sent back to their homes. Patients have complained to the management on many occasions about their plight. They staged a protest in front of the hospital recently demanding to find a speedy solution. Dr. Namal Gamage said that other surgeries are performed at the Cardio Surgical Theatre with the approval and knowledge of the Health Ministry. The attempts to get the views of the Health Ministry about the matter were unsuccessful.
