An unidentified ‘invasive plant variety’ is spreading in the Maha-kanadarawa Tank, Mihintale. People in the area say that if those plants were not destroyed, it could spread to other tanks as well. It is reported that this invasive plant variety is spreading fast in the Mihintale, Maha-kanadarawa Tank. It has not been identified yet. Farmer organizations in Maha-kanadarawa say that the plants are poisonous. They said that skin allergies occur if the pants are rubbed against the skin. Director General of Irrigation S. Mohanraj made an inspection tour of the area. He said that steps would be taken to eliminate the plants. Professor Cyril Wijesundara who has conducted research on invasive plants said that steps should be taken to destroy the invasive plants before those spread into other tanks in the area.
