President Maithripala Sirisena has said that scholars

and intellectuals should come forward to serve the country and the people. The President was addressing the 75th Anniversary commemoration of the Kegalla Vidyalaya.
The President who arrived at the Kegalle Vidyalaya was accorded a very warm welcome by the students of the College. The President also joined in viewing the exhibition held parallel to the Anniversary commemoration.
Addressing the function, President Maithripala Sirisena said that intellectuals and scholars should not be marginalized being restricted only to one field.
The President mentioned that intellectuals should not be limited only to their field. They should win the society and take leadership in society. It would be possible to sort out many issues in society, only when the intellectuals come forward in competitiveness in society. Academics should come forward in society. They should take over the leadership and shoulder the prime responsibilities. It is important that an intellectual directs attention to issues in communities. It has been found that many intellectuals are limited only to their particular field. But the President said that their knowledge should be used for the progress of society.
Responding to a request made a student of the Kegalla Vidyalaya, the President said that an appeal made by a child cannot be turned down by a father. The child did not make only a request but handed over a plan of a three storied building. The President said that he instructed his Secretary to allocate the necessary funds.
A set of books comprising two books authored by the children of the school was presented to the President.
The President also joined in handing over trophies and certificates to students who had displayed their skills.
Ministers Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and Kabir Hashim, State Minister Champika Premadasa, Deputy Minister Dushmantha Mithrapala, Chief Minister Mahipala Herath and School Principal G.A.M.A. Sarathchandra were among those present at the event.
