The Government Medical Officers’ Association is engaged in a strike protesting against the Sri Lanka Singapore Free Trade Agreement. Patients who arrived at hospitals seeking treatment claimed that it is the innocent masses that undergo severe hindrances.
Members of the Government Medical Officers’ Association launched an island wide token strike with effect from 8 am today, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said that they undertook this union action to protest against the Singapore Free Trade Agreement. The Association however, said that they would undertake emergency treatment despite the strike. But the patients who arrived at hospital seeking treatment said that they faced immense difficulties as a result of the strike.
However the Government Medical Officers Association said that the strike is not effective in maternity, children’s, cancer and armed forces hospitals as well as kidney disease treatment units.

In the meantime, work was carried out at the Central Colombo Government Hospital as usual. This was reported by its Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruchira Saranapala.
He pointed out that all facilities were being afforded to everyone who is seeking treatment.
