The Government has commenced to purchase traditional
paddy cultivated by the farmers in the Polonnaruwa District under the National Food Production Programme. The Government is to pay 70 rupees for a kilogram of traditional paddy. The programme is implemented on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena. The Government distributed 2400 kilograms of traditional varieties of paddy among 800 farmers free of charge and provided them with the facilities to cultivate the paddy. Only organic fertilizer is used to cultivate these varieties of paddy. The harvesting took place yesterday. Purchasing of paddy was commenced from Hathamuna storage complex in Hingurakgoda with the attendance of officials from the Presidential Secretariat.
