Fishermen advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to adverse weather


It has been warned that the speed of the wind may increase in the sea areas surrounding the island due to the inclement weather. As such warnings have been issued to refrain from fishing and naval activities.
In the meantime, the Department of Meteorology has mentioned that heavy showers can be expected due to the wavy type disturbance prevailing for several days in the vicinity of Sri Lanka developing into a low pressure area.
Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre said it has been reported that strong winds could be experienced in the sea areas around the island. This situation could be expected particularly in the sea areas from Jaffna to via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle up to Pottuvil. As such fishermen have been advised to refrain from engaging in any fishing activity in these sea areas during the next 48 hours and the navel communities are also requested to be vigilant. According to the Met Department announcement fishermen are advised to abstain from venturing into the sea. As such rains could be experienced in the internal part of the island.
Anusha Warnasuriya of the forecast Division of the Department of Meteorology said that the wavy type disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka has developed in to a low pressure area and is now located to the south of Sri Lanka. It is likely to develop further and move west-northwestward, it said, issuing a severe weather advisory for heavy rainfall and strong winds over the island and in the sea areas around it.Under the influence of the system, and it’s associated active cloudiness with very heavy showers and very strong gusty winds up to 70-80kmph during thundershowers and sudden roughness of the seas are expected over deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Pottuvil via Mannar, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
