First pharmaceutical manufacturing zone is in the offing

Agreements were signed for Sri Lanka’s first pharmaceutical manufacturing zone under the patronage of Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne. The pharmaceutical manufacturing zone will be constructed at Welipenna in Kalutara. Malaysian company, BPC Health Care will invest for the project. Drugs manufactured at the facility will be bought by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Dr. Sayura Samarasundera of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation signed the MoU on behalf of the Corporation and Dr. Patrick Lean signed on behalf of the Malaysian company.
Minister Rajitha Senaratne told media that his intention was to quell the shortage of drugs in the government hospitals. He said that the current administration was able to manage the situation successfully.
The general public benefits a lot as a result of the reduction of the drug prices. He pointed out that prices of certain drugs have been slashed in big amounts; for example, drugs used for high blood pressure and diabetes. More than 400 drug brands have been subjected to the reduction.
