Former Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake is remembered today. He who lived to be great, Dudley Senanayake’s 43rd death anniversary falls today. This great leader who gave the lead to renaissance in the agricultural sectors was popularly known as the “The Father who Gave Rice.”
Dudley Senanayake who was the son of D.S. Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, was the second Prime Minister of the island. When he was selected to fill the premiership vacancy created with the death of his father, he decided to dissolve Parliament and call for an election. This great statesman who was always dedicated to safeguarding democracy held the premiership on three occasions. Serving as the Agriculture Minister within the first Cabinet of Independent Sri Lanka, he carried forward the farmer colonization scheme launched by his father. After a noteworthy service to the people, Dudley Senanayake passed away on April 13th in the year 1973. At that time he was 62 years.
The entire nation that was grieving the death of “The Father who Gave Rice” hoisted white flags irrespective of party differences. The people began descending on Woodlands to pay their final respects, halting the New Year festivities.
The Commemorative Foundation has arranged a number of programmes to mark the 43rd Commemoration of Dudley Senanayake.
