Customs seize glyphosate and beedi leaves

Customs officials have succeeded in seizing a haul of glyphosate worth over 4.5 million rupees and also 6000 kilogrammes of beedi leaves.
The stock of glyphosate had been smuggled into the country under the guise of importing broken rice. It had been packed akin to rice packings. Customs Officials said that they came across the haul of banned agro chemical during an inspection of containers. Among those who joined in the inspection of the containers were officials including Customs Director General P.S.M. Charles.
Meanwhile, the Customs Officials also succeeded in taking into custody more than 6000 kilogrammes of beedi leaves that had been illegally imported. Customs officials said that its value was around 4.5 million rupees.
Preliminary investigations revealed that this stock of beedi leaves had been brought into the country under the guise of importing motor vehicle spare parts and dried chillies. The Sri Lanka Customs are pursing further investigations.
