Minister Sagala Ratnayake has said that correct information can be
revealed only after judicial medical reports with regard to the Jaffna incident are received. Addressing the weekly Cabinet news briefing, the Minister said that vital information is surfacing from the initial reports.
The Minister said that particularly with the environment in which bicycle groups were roaming last year the Government remained cautious, Four hour mobile patrols were operating and road barriers were established for this purpose. The cyclists had driven without heeding orders of those who manned the barriers. Another group was on the other side. When this group too requested the cyclists to halt they had not heeded the orders. It is reported that shots were fired at the air. There are doubts whether shots were fired at the cyclists.
The Minister said final determination on the incident can be given after the conclusion of the forensic testing and inquiries. Vital information is surfacing from the initial reports. Accordingly the Minister said that this would be a very reasonable inquiry and punishment would be meted out to the wrongdoers.
When the incident occurred, not only the President and the Prime Minister but also the Opposition Leader, the Tamil National Alliance, the Jaffna Civil Society made a fervent dedication to rein in the situation.
