COPE reports of the previous regime were not directed to the Attorney General; Minister Kiriella


Minister Lakshman Kiriella has said that even though 40 COPE reports were released by the previous Government, not a single report was directed to the Attorney General. Joining in a Parliamentary debate today, the Minister further said that the direction of the COPE report released by the present Government clearly portrays the Government’s transparency.

Minister Lakshman Kiriella said it was Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe who appointed an Opposition Parliamentarian and Chairman of COPE. It was a Government Parliamentarian who headed COPE for 20 years under the previous administration. He told the House that from 2005 to 2015, there were 40 COPE reports released. But not a single report was forwarded to the Attorney General. But he pointed out that the Government sent its first COPE report to the Attorney General. The Government has done its best to look into the issue.

Opposition Leader R. Sambandan has said that they had great in this country. But he said there is corruption. No body engaged in corruption should be spared and persons responsible should be brought to book. He urged the Government to appoint an upright independent commission of inquiry and find out the truth. He said the country should know the truth.
