Construction work of the South Asia’s largest kidney hospital commenced under the patronage of the President


The construction work of the largest Specialized Hospital for Kidney Diseases in South Asia commenced under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena this morning. The Chinese government has provided a fund of 12,000 million rupees for the hospital as per a request made by the President. The event which was held under the aegis of President Maithripala Sirisena was attended by many distinguished people including Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne. The hospital is equipped with all modern facilities for kidney patients. The hospital has 100 beds equipped with dialysis machines. A kidney transplantation theater is also being constructed at the premises. The new hospital is expected to provide clinical, laboratory and counseling services related with the kidney disease.
Kidney disease has become a major health threat in Sri Lanka in the capacity of a non-communicable disease. President Maithripala Sirisena, who paid special attention about the situation, took measures to control the spread of disease as well as ensure treatments to the patients coping with kidney disease. Accordingly, the President took measures to appoint a Presidential Task Force on Kidney Disease Prevention.
Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that the new hospital which is to be constructed in Polonnaruwa for the benefit of the kidney patients is armed with all facilities like hospitals in Colombo.
