Sri Lanka enjoys a leading place among the fastest growing tourist attraction countries within the Asia Pacific Zone. This is revealed in the Global Destinations Cities Index.

According to the 2015 Global Destinations Cities Index, which projects the number of tourists staying in 132 of the most popular cities worldwide, Colombo will see a 19.57% increase in foreign travellers this year. It claimed that Colombo is the fourth fastest growing destination for international visitors.

Chengdu in China is said to be the fastest growing destination while next is Osaka in Japan. It is followed by Abu Dhabi. Mumbai is placed ninth in the ratings.

In the meantime plans are afoot to commemorate World Tourism Day which falls on the 27th of this month. Accessible Tourism is this year’s theme for World Tourism Day.

For the last quarter–century, World Tourism Day, held annually on 27th September, has aimed to foster awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic impact. Parallel to this even, plans have been drawn up by the Colombo University to hold a conference in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority at the BMICH on the 28th.
