The attention of the Cabinet has been drawn to the fact that rice should be imported from countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam if the price remained at a higher. Indonesia has donated 10,000 metric tons of rice following a request made by the President. These stocks are due to reach the island shortly.
The attention of the Cabinet has been drawn to issuing rice stocks to the market. The Cabinet decided to appoint a Cabinet Sub Committee for the issue of the balance paddy stocks after milling in a suitable method and to take action against mill owners who refrain from issuing rice stocks to the market. Cabinet approval has been received to appoint the Sub Committee headed by the Special Projects Minister.
The Cabinet noted that the Ministry of Rural Economic Affairs has taken initiatives to issue 90,958 metric tons of paddy of the Paddy Marketing Board at District level to private paddy mill owners and Lanka Sathosa to be processed into rice.
The Cabinet further considered that Lanka Sathosa has already processed the paddy and a kilogram of rice was being traded through Sathosa outlets at 76 rupees. But the Ministers took cognizance of the fact that private mill owners have still not issued their rice stocks to the market. Accordingly the Cabinet has decided to appoint a Cabinet Sub Committee to take future action.
