The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a proposal to adopt
and implement the National Policy on elimination of child labour in the country.
Sri Lanka agreed to eliminate child labour at Global Child Labour Conference in 2010 held at Hague, Netherland. The Government says there has been a decrease of 50% in the use of child labour from 2008/2009 to 2015/2016 indicating the ability of eliminating child labour in Sri Lanka.
Moreover, the national policy on the elimination of child labour is an essential factoR in regaining the GSP Plus of the European Union.
Accordingly, the proposal made by Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations, W.D.J. Seneviratne, to adopt and implement the said policy, received the nod of the Cabinet of Ministers.
