The number of accidents caused as a result of the use of fireworks with the dawn of the New Year last night has increased. This has been confirmed by the Health sectors. Also it is reported that there is an increase in the number of overall accidents this year.
Many accidents were reported by the use of fireworks during the last few years, causing injuries to the face and hands. There is a keen enthusiasm especially among the children to light firecrackers. The injuries faced by the children due to the use of fireworks in the past had been high due to lack of proper awareness on the accidents that would result. As a result it was the view of the Director of the National Hospital Anil Jasinghe to keep away the children from the use of fireworks. The Health sectors had also warned the people to refrain from lighting firecrackers with the hands. Statistics of the Colombo National Hospital said the number of patients that arrived at the Hospital due to injuries caused by the use of fireworks during the last two days was 14.
Chief Training Nurse of the Colombo National Hospital Pushpa Ramyani Soysa said that dire attention should be focused on being very much careful in the use of fireworks as the injuries caused would be critical.
In the meantime, the Health authorities have also requested organizers of New Year festivals to draw their firm attention to the possibility of accidents that would result during this festive season. Many such Avurudhu festivals are being organized during this season in every part of the country. The Health Sectors said that the organizers should take maximum measures to the possibility of accidents that may occur during the conduct of traditional sports events at these festivals.
