The Department of Railways has paid attention on commencing an electric train service in between Panadura and Veyangoda. According to Deputy Minister of Transport Ashok Abeysinghe, the initial work relating to the project has already begun. Deputy Minister Ashok Abeysinghe further noted that the Asian Development Bank has granted 600 million US dollars for the electric train project. He added that the initial feasibility study has already been done. The Deputy Minister expressed that the project is scheduled to be completed by 2023. The construction work of the project will be started this year. In addition the Kelani Valley railway line will be widened. The railway line to Rambukkana will also be given a facelift and the signal system will also be upgraded.
