Prof. K.K. Karunatilake of the Social Science Unit of the Kelaniya University
has revealed that about 658 illegal abortions are taking place in the country daily. This situation has surfaced as the country’s law bars abortions.
Prof. Karunatilake was addressing a news conference held at the Health Education Bureau under the theme “Should Abortion be legalized.”
He pointed out that statistics have revealed that around 658 illegal abortions were taking place daily in the country. This meant that 240,170 abortions were taking place per year. This has become a responsible issues within the education and health sectors. If this situation is to be brought under control, formal sexual education should be given a prominent place while laws related to abortion should be relaxed.
